Peter Crouch to play Rodney Trotter lookalike in TV ad – for £30,000

The 6ft 7in footballer has been scouted for the Only Fools and Horses inspired spot. It could net the ex Spurs star a bumper cash pot after he left Premier League Burnley.

Bizarrely Crouch, 38, once said he hated being nicknamed Rodney at the start of his career, when the lanky striker was a ringer for Nicholas Lyndhurst’s Peckham sitcom dimwit.

A filmmaker has sounded out Peter for the campaign to promote local shopping.

Crouch will team up with other lookalikes inlcuing one based on Del Boy for the skit, which has reportedly been given the green light by BBC bosses who created Only Fools.

A source said: “The plan is for doubles of Del Boy, Uncle Albert, Boycie and Marlene in the ad due to be released at the end of the year.

“Crouch’s agent has said they will consider the Peter for the role – with a fee of £30,000 for half a day’s filming in London.”

Peter started out his career at Tottenham Hotspur before playing for QPR, Southampton, Portsmouth and Liverpool.

Teammates and football fans have long likened Crouchie to Rodney – the little brother to Del Boy, played by David Jason.

In an interview dad-of-four Peter – who’s married to Strictly star Abbey Clancy – told: “I used to be compared to Rodney Trotter from Only Fools and Horses but I am very lucky in the way that my personality is.”

He told how a newspaper once persuaded him to dress up for a shoot when he broke into the football big time.

“When I started out nobody told you how to do an interview. That’s how I ended up on the front-page of a newspaper dressed as Rodney Trotter with a Reliant Robin.

“That picture has haunted me for a long time. I was only 19, playing at QPR and it was taken just outside Loftus Road. Still, when it came to interviews I just tried to be myself. I always felt the more you were fed lines the worse you came off.”

Last year the striker revealed his love of an Only Fools inspired chant which included the line “Black or white rich or poor, Peter Crouch is gonna score.”

The ad will promote Beanser – a retail app that launched in January.

Creators are set to launch a local shopping and market traders campaign, hence using the Trotter brothers lookalikes.

The source said: “Crouch as Rodney will be required to lug suitcases around for Del Boy lookalike Steve Rooney as he tries to convince the public to buy his goods.

“Rodney will then figure out using an app is the best way to offer the public a good deal from independent traders Beanser.”

Filming is set to take place in August and released in December.Filmmaker Nick Kirk – who has worked on Bullseye and Family Fortunes – will make the clip.

Sources said it would not break not intellectual property laws as it does not use the show’s theme tune use, any mention of its title or the original script.
