Pep Guardiola has admitted retaining the Premier League is an incredibly difficult task after Liverpool narrowly missed out on becoming champions last season.

Liverpool ended their season on a high by winning the Champions League, but were pipped to the Premier League title by Manchester City.

Guardiola’s side were the first team to win back-to-back league titles in over a decade and in an interview with Catalan outlet Ara, the City boss was asked if he felt Liverpool were jealous of their domestic success.

He replied: ‘Winning the Premier League is very hard, and I speak from experience.

‘This is the first time in eleven years that a team has won two consecutive league titles, which Barcelona has done many times [in La Liga].

‘I am certain Liverpool are eager to win the Premier League.

‘Liverpool have not won the league for 30 years, and we all saw what a team Liverpool were this year.’

Guardiola has repeatedly been linked with a move away from City, but the Spaniard has always dismissed speculation about his future at the club.

While Liverpool are planning a quiet summer, City are closing in on their first major signing of the summer.

Rodri is expected to arrive in a £62.5million from Atletico Madrid, as the Spanish side confirmed the signing of Real Madrid midfielder Marcos Llorente.
