Paul Pogba: Is this the reason Man Utd star made team of the year? Pundit reveals theory

That’s the opinion of ESPN pundit Steve Nicol.

Pogba’s selection stunned fans on Thursday morning, as the Manchester United midfielder made the cut ahead of rivals Christian Eriksen and Eden Hazard.

The Frenchman had a good spell of form earlier this season after Jose Mourinho was sacked, before going off the boil again in the latter stages after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was handed the job on a permanent basis.

And Nicol believes that the only reason Pogba was included was because of timing.

He said on ESPN FC: ”The Pogba thing is only because of when the vote happened.

“I don’t know exactly when, but it was February or March.

“Around that time, Pogba was in the team for that incredible stretch of wins.

“That’s why he’s made it.

“Should he have made it? Absolutely not.”

Fans were also confused at Hazard’s omission, given that he has scored 16 goals and chipped in with 13 assists this term.

Up front for the team of the year, Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero and Mohammed Salah, nobody has contributed to more goals.

However, Nicol argued that instead of Hazard being given a place, it should be Salah’s team-mate Sadio Mane.

The Senegalese star has scored 18 goals in the league this term and given one assist, as Liverpool look to win their first league title for 29 years.

“Liverpool are in the semi finals of the Champions League, and there’s a possibility they’re going to win the league for the first time in 29 years, right?” he asked.

“There’s one huge almighty reason, a guy called Mane.

“You’re telling me Hazard should be in over Mane?

“This isn’t the best 11 players, we’re putting a team together here, so absolutely it should be Mane over Hazard.”
