Parents are swearing by the 'four present rule' this Christmas

At Christmas time, it’s very easy to get swept up in the festivities and spend a little too much on presents.

Everything you see somehow becomes a must-have stocking filler, but are you really buying things your little ones need?

Meanwhile, other people don’t even know where to start with gift getting and waste hours wandering aimlessly from shop to shop.

No matter which category of present-buyer you fall into, there’s a very simple way to make the whole ordeal a whole lot easier.

It’s known as the four present rule and a number of parents online are swearing by the shopping method.

So how does the four present rule work?

Instead of buying dozens of toys and things that will clutter up your cupboards, you simply buy four things that will make for much more meaningful gifts.

The first present is something they want and the second is something they need.

The third is something to wear and the fourth is something to read.

Easy, right and it even rhymes, so you should have no trouble remembering the rule.

One mum recently shared the rule on a Facebook page called, Quirky Momma, and her post quickly went viral.

“I’m going with… something they wear, something to read and something to do. The Santa gift is something they want,” commented a fellow parent.

A different user said: “Yes we have done that for the past 3 years, I love it. We also add one gift from Santa.”

A third added: “We’re going to do that this year. Trying to have a more minimalist Christmas with quality over quantity.”

And the best part is that the rule also works perfectly for birthdays as well as Christmas – so you can save money and time and get great gifts all year round.
