Olivia Colman Covers Portishead’s Glory Box for Charity

Olivia Colman is having an amazing year. The talented British actress won an Academy Award for best actress in a leading role category, won a Golden Globe as well as a BAFTA for her amazing performance in The Favourite, a film that has often been referred to as the most amazingly strange movies, since its release.

Talking about the 2019 Academy Awards, in particular, even she looked surprised after receiving the award as Glenn Close was the clear-cut front-runner. In fact, not a lot of people betting on 2019 Oscar Winners, had put their money on Olivia Colman. Furthermore, she was hilariously horrible in series 2 of Flea Bag. It’s no news that Olivia will next be appearing as Queen Elizabeth 2 in the popular Netflix series The Crown, keenly looked forward to by everyone this autumn.

Cover for ‘Children in Need’

Olivia Colman has recently recorded a cover version of Portishead’s classic song Glory Box, as a part of a charity album for ‘Children in Need’. She is only one of the many stars who have covered popular songs in this album, recorded recently at Abbey Road. The album also features a couple of actors from Doctor Who – Jodie Whittaker who has covered ColdPlay’s Yellow and David Tennant covering Sunshine on Leith by The Proclaimers. The track by Jodie Whittaker is already out and the complete album is expected to be launched in November 2019.

Not many knew about Colman’s liking for the mid-90s trip-hop artist, however, Portishead’s debut album known as Dummy is known to have been a regular fixture in her days at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and Cambridge University. Paul Hands, her drama tutor of those days spoke to The Times and revealed that Colman always had a beautiful singing voice, but people hadn’t heard her sing in public till now. The actress is also known for having delivered a half-spoken and half-sung performance in the London Road (2015), the film version of the musical surrounding the life of Steve Wright, the serial killer.

She can definitely hold a tune!

London Road’s unusual score needed both Colman as well as Tom Hardy, her co-star to sing songs using the pitch and rhythms of speech, instead of going for a top line melody. Talking to the Evening Standard in this regard, she had said in an interview dated June 8, 2015, “I used to sing at school. I can hold a tune, but I’m not under any impression I’m a proper singer. It was really scary, but lovely.”

The talented 45 year old actress who made a name for herself with comic roles in Twenty Twelve, Rev and Peep Show, has coincidently also filmed many scenes of the Somerset town of Portishead, as she starred in Broadchurch, the ITV crime drama.

The charity album, “The Children in Need’ will be released on November 1 and it’s expected that minimum £ 1.5 from every sale will be handed to the charity.
