Now even Theresa May’s own husband ‘thinks she should quit as PM’

EVEN Theresa May’s husband now wants her to quit No10, it was claimed today.

The PM is under mounting pressure to name the date she will step down as Tory rivals jostle to replace her in Downing Street.

And now her husband Philip reportedly wants her find a dignified way out rather than being dethroned in a power struggle.

A friend of Mr May told the Sunday Times: “He loves her dearly, and he wants her to exit decently.”

The Prime Minister faces demands to reveal this week when she will quit and trigger a leadership election.

Ex-minister Priti Patel has written to her accusing her of being “petulant” and smearing Brexiteers.

The former Aid Secretary blasted: “I cannot think of another Conservative prime minister who has fared so badly in negotiations with the EU.”

And in a further blow to Mrs May’s hopes of securing a Brexit deal, compromise talks with Labour are now on the verge of collapse.

Top Corbyn ally Barry Gardiner said: “I don’t know if these talks are going to work.”

John McDonnell accused the Tories of leaking from the meetings in a bid to appear tough.

RACE FOR THE TOP

Conservative leadership contenders are busy setting out their stalls to try and grab pole position to be the next PM.

Matt Hancock and Amber Rudd wrote a newspaper article arguing for a “modern, compassionate Conservative party” – suggesting they could run on a joint ticket.

Jeremy Hunt is planning to use a speech this week to call for “a national renewal post-Brexit”.

Dominic Raab has been talking up a BBC documentary on Brexit where he’s criticised by Eurocrats as proof he’s tough enough to get a better deal from Brussels.

Liz Truss told the Mail on Sunday she wants to see 1million homes built on the green belt, positioning herself as the free-market candidate.

And supporters of Esther McVey praised her for openly admitting she wants to be leader – unlike most of the frontrunners who have been more secretive about their intentions.

Jacob Rees-Mogg wrote in The Sun On Sunday that the next PM must be a passionate Brexiteer and tipped Boris Johnson.

But Steve Baker warned he will run himself if the likes of Boris and Mr Raab don’t pull their reluctant support for Mrs May’s deal.
