Nintendo Switch Lite: Price, specs, UK release date and everything we know so far

Nintendo has revealed its newest game console to the world, the Nintendo Switch Lite.

Cheaper and lighter than the original Nintendo Switch, the Japanese video game company has described its new console as being “dedicated to handheld play.”

The announcement is a long-time coming for gamers, who haven’t seen a new piece of gaming hardware from Nintendo since the 2DS XL was launched in 2017.

Ahead of its release date later this year, here’s everything you need to know:

Nintendo Switch Lite price

Nintendo Switch Lite: Nintendo unveils its lighter, smaller version of the Nintendo Switch (Nintendo)

A UK retail price hasn’t been confirmed yet, but the Nintendo Switch Lite will cost $199.99 in the US.

Nintendo’s newest offering is considerably cheaper than the original, with the classic Switch setting you back $299.99 in the states and £279.99 in the UK.

When will the Nintendo Switch Lite be released in the UK?

We don’t have long to wait – the Switch Lite will be released in countries worldwide on September 20, 2019.

How will the Nintendo Switch Lite be different from the original?

There are a few significant differences between the Nintendo Switch Lite and its predecessor, the Nintendo Switch.

One key difference is that the Nintendo Switch Lite cannot be docked into the TV like the previous version, which was one of the Nintendo Switch’s main selling points.

Nintendo’s General Producer, Yoshiaki Koizumi, also revealed that the Lite would not have the usual Joy-Con controllers. On the new model, these are attached to the sides and cannot be removed or used as motion controllers or separate mini-gamepads.

In an effort to make its newest addition to the Switch family truly portable, Nintendo has made the Switch Lite 10cm smaller and 30cm shorter than its older sibling.

It is also a lot lighter than the original, weighing a mere 275g instead of 398g.

The battery also runs an hour longer on average than the regular Nintendo Switch.

What games can I play on the Nintendo Switch Lite?

As the Joy-Con controllers can’t be detached on the Switch Lite, some Switch games – such as the launch title 1-2 Switch and Nintendo Labo – will be incompatible with the new model.

Any other Switch game that does not require the use of Joy-Cons or motion controls will be fine to play on the Switch Lite.

Nintendo Switch Lite colours and models

Special edition models of the Nintendo Switch Lite will be launched later this year (Nintendo)

Gamers will have three different Switch Lite colours to choose from: yellow, grey or turquoise.

Over the next few months, special edition models will also be announced, including a Pokemon Nintendo Switch Lite Zacian and Zamazenta Edition, both of which are scheduled for release on November 8, 2019.

Are there any pre-order deals?

There are no pre-order deals yet, but we can expect some to be announced closer to the Switch Lite’s release date.
