Nine tips to save money at Greggs including how to get free drinks and doughnuts

GREGGS is often the go-to place for sausage rolls and tasty bakes, but did you know there are plenty of ways to save money at your favourite bakery chain?

Stormzy left Greggs fans up and down the country green with envy this week after becoming the first person to bag a black card.

Whether you fancy a sausage roll or a slice of cake, there isn’t much Greggs doesn’t provide

Greggs says its strictly invite-only “concierge” black card entitles the holder to order anything from the menu “straight to your door”.

In the personal video message to Stormzy, Greggs said: “Could be Croydon, Glasto, Reading, 100 bags to Flipz’s crib, direct to Fraser T Smith’s Putney studio, even to AJ Tracey’s penthouse on the 47th floor.”

Sadly it looks like these cards are super rare and will probably only be given out to celebrities and high-profile people – but that doesn’t stop you still being able to save money on your next visit.

Here are some of the best ways to keep more cash in your pocket, and sausage rolls on your plate.

Take your food away

By law, Greggs has to charge 20 per cent VAT on each item sold to customers who choose to eat in.

These prices are marked on each sticker for every product, so you should be able to see the difference between eating in and taking away.

For example, a sausage roll would only cost you £1 if you’re taking it away, but this price goes up to £1.20 for those eating in.

You won’t be charged VAT if you don’t eat in, so this is one way to save cash at Greggs.

Prices of each product will vary depending on your location.

Become a VIP taster

Sign up to the Greggs Rewards scheme and the bakery chain says you can become a “VIP taster”.

It’s pretty secretive about what this actually involves, but on the Rewards website it says you get access to “exclusive tasty treats”.

We’ve asked Greggs what exactly these treats are, and if it means new products, and we’ll update this article when we know more.

You can sign up to Greggs Rewards for free online or by downloading the free Greggs app.

The app is also free to download and can be done via the App Store or Google Play.

Visit a Greggs outlet store

Greggs has ten little-known outlet stores where you’ll find cut-price pastries and cakes.

It’s unclear what sets the goods in the outlet stores apart as the items seem to be exactly the same.

But we reported back in 2016 that the cut-price pastries were day-old stock that would otherwise have been thrown away by regular stores.

Last year, we spoke to one Greggs shopper who said they pocketed £37 worth of Greggs food for £12 at their local outlet.

Where are Greggs’ outlet stores?

HERE’S where you can find Greggs’ ten outlet stores:

  • 75 Grand Avenue, Ely, Cardiff, CF5 4LE
  • 58 Holton Road, Barry, South Glamorgan, CF63 4HE
  • 638 Washwood Heath Road, Ward End, Birmingham, B8 2HQ
  • 162 High Street, Princes End, Tipton, West Midlands, DY4 9JB
  • 4 Frederick Street, South Shields, NE33 5EA
  • 18 Tynemouth Road, Howdon, NE28 0LF
  • 62 Villette Road, Hendon, Sunderland, SR2 8RW
  • 265 Welbeck Road, Walker, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE6 2QX
  • 403 Westgate Road, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE4 6PB
  • 1 Easterly Road, Leeds, LS8 3AS

Sign up to the app and get a free drink

Another perk of signing up to Greggs app is a free hot drink when you first log in.

Just click on the “rewards” section when you go on the app for the first time and the option for a free drink should be there.

The deal includes any regular-size hot drink with no purchase necessary.

While prices will vary, a regular hot drink can cost up to £1.90 usually if you go for a latte, cappuccino or mocha.

Buy seven drinks, get one free

When you buy seven drinks through the Greggs app, you get the eighth one on the house.

Your hot drink will be available in the “my rewards” in your account.

The hot drink can be worth up to £2, which covers pretty much anything on the menu.

As stated above, the most expensive hot drink you can buy is typically around £1.90 for a latte, cappuccino or mocha.

Get 20p off hot drinks by bringing your own cup

If pays to recycle and reuse if you’re a Greggs customer.

To be exact, you’ll get 20p off hot drinks whenever you bring in your own cup to use.

It counts for any cup, meaning it doesn’t have to be Greggs branded.

Free cake or doughnuts on your birthday

Greggs knows when it’s your birthday because you have to give the app your date of birth when you sign up.

So log into the app on your special day and you’ll see a new reward for either one free cupcake, cream cake or doughnut.

It’s valid for one-month after being issued so if you’ve already had your cake and eaten it on the day, you can save your voucher for another time.

Pay through the app

The Greggs app allows you to top it up with cash, so you can load up your sausage roll fund when you’re feeling flush.

This means when it’s getting closer to pay day and money is looking a bit tight, you’ll have your emergency Greggs stash to tuck into.

To do this, go to your account on the app and select “payment methods” and then “top up”.

Of course, only put on what you can afford to go without at the time.

Get wedges with your sandwich

Greggs launched a new dinner meal deal back in September 2019 and it includes wedges to warm your tummy.

From 4pm until close, hungry customers can get any hot dinner main or hot sandwich, wedges and a drink for £4 from the “Hot to Go” counters.

This saves you around £2 compared to buying the items separately.

For example, the £3.10 southern fried chicken baguette, a £1.90 hot drink, plus £1 for the wedges, would come to £6 normally.

This was the price when the deal launched in September 2019, although Greggs has yet to tell us if it’s changed.

On top of this, Greggs fans can get any pizza and drink for £2 after 4pm.

The evening menu is available in over 500 branches – around a third of Greggs stores.

Greggs fans will be thrilled to know Asda is the first supermarket to open counters by the bakery chain inside stores in five locations.

And last month, Greggs announced it’s launching a nationwide delivery service with Just Eat.

The most high-profile news to come from Greggs this year is its eagerly-awaiting vegan steak bake.
