Nikon Launches the NX Field Remote Shooting System

Nikon has announced the NX Field, a new remote shooting system that is meant to support photographers and videographers “on the front line of news and sports photography.”

This application will allow users to link multiple Nikon digital SLR and Mirrorless cameras, operate and adjust settings, and automatically upload images captured from all of the linked cameras to a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server.

The application has been launched by Nikon Professional Service (NPS) — the organization through which Nikon offers support and services to professional photographers throughout the world — and is currently compatible with the Nikon D6 and Nikon D5 digital SLR cameras. Support for the mirrorless Nikon Z9, Z7 II, and Z6 II are planned for a future update, which the company did not provide an estimated timeline for.

The cameras can be connected via wired or wireless LAN and each system can be controlled through the NX Field app individually or all at once depending on the photographer’s needs and current configuration.

“The advantage of the Nikon NX Field software is that by connecting multiple cameras, a ‘Master Camera’ can be used to control the others simultaneously. This means that when the ‘Master Camera’ shutter release is pressed all connected cameras will capture the exposure,” Nikon says.

With the ability to connect automatically to remote FTP servers, news and sports photographers can ensure that images are delivered immediately for any required and important coverage.

Nikon says that the NX Field app supports remote shooting with both 5G (access point) or directly connected through the internet. This means users will not have to remain on-site to control the cameras as they can be remotely operated from anywhere that has a stable internet or data connection.

The NX Field app is scheduled to be available for download here on June 17, 2021. As a note, Nikon has also stated that to use NX Field, photographers must also download the dedicated firmware for each compatible camera.

The full user manual is available to download now for any photographer that wants to get a jump start on the application and peruse the numerous options available.
