Four years after he received the accolade, Niall was awarded the Freedom of Cork in recognition of his TV, film and stage work.
When he accepted the honour from the Cork City Council, the star admitted to feeling “overwhelmed”.
He jokingly said during the ceremony: “The freedom of one’s native city is a high and very special honour. When that city is Cork, it is difficult to retain one’s humility.”
Niall added: “What I’m trying to explain, like, is that you are proud of your own city.
