Villa Mitre then began to throw toilet parts onto the pitch in a rage, vandalising the ground and clashing with police.

At least three policemen were injured, as one could be seen holding his head as he was escorted off the pitch by security.

In an attempt to defuse the rampaging fans fireman began to spray a hose into the stands.

After five-minutes of chaos the referee decided to halt the game meaning Villa Mitre advance to the last 16 of the cup while Newell’s are suffered a shock exit.

The incident comes just four months after the Copa Libertadores final between Boca Juniors and River Plate was plagued with fan violence.

After the first game ended 2-2, River Plate fans attacked the Boca Juniors team bus before the second leg leaving two players hospitalised while others vomited and in need of treatment after coach windows were smashed and tear gas was used.

The game was postponed for over two hours after the scheduled kick-off amid claims River Plate tried to force Boca to take to the field, before later seeing the match cancelled.

Following two cancellations and another agonising two week delay, the second leg was eventually played one month after the first.

River Plate would go onto win the final, 5-3 on aggregate, though the game was played at Real Madrid’s Bernabeu having been driven out of Argentina due to the fan chaos.
