The breakthrough comes 24 years after Viagra was patented for use in erectile dysfunction.
Dutch researcher Prof Eric Claassen said: “A lot of women are really unhappy. There is an enormous unmet need.
“These women are not seeking help because they want sex every day but because they want a healthy sex life.”
The pill is set to become the first to boost female libido to be licensed in Europe.
The prescription-only drug is taken 3½ hours before sex, and comes in two versions.
Lybrido, containing testosterone and sildenafil — the active ingredient in Viagra — works on the brain and body to put women in the mood for sex.
Lybridos, a combination of testosterone and buspirone, is aimed at women who feel inhibited between the sheets.
Women take a saliva test to work out which to take.

The pills have been tested on 940 women who filled in an online diary after sex.
In one trial users enjoyed two extra sex sessions, and one more orgasm a month.
Adriaan Tuiten, of maker Emotional Brain, hopes the treatment will “break taboos” and allow “women to take charge of their bodies”.
