Netflix Will Fight Mo'Nique's Lawsuit, Calls Opening Offer Fair

The gloves are officially on, as Netflix has decided to fight comedian Mo’Nique and her lawsuit that claims the streamer of gender and racial discrimination. Netflix officially answered the call, giving Mo’Nique a few strong words about her latest move against the monster streaming service.

Mo’Nique filed the suit earlier this week, suing Netflix after she publicly railed and lobbied against the channel. The company had initially offered her $500,000 for a stand-up special, which she immediately and publicly scoffed at. Because some of her contemporaries such as Amy Schumer and Chris Rock have landed lucrative multi-million dollar deals. Netflix had this to say against the lawsuit.

“We care deeply about inclusion, equity, and diversity and take any accusations of discrimination very seriously. We believe our opening offer to Mo’Nique was fair – which is why we will be fighting this lawsuit.”

That’s their side. As far as the case goes, you can read further for the claims made in this Mo’nique lawsuit.

“Netflix courted Mo’Nique, saw what she had to offer and made her an offer. But the offer Netflix made Mo’Nique wreaked [sic] of discrimination; it perpetuated the pay gap suffered by Black women. Netflix’s business practice of paying Black women less than non-Black women for substantially equal or similar work causes harm to Plaintiff that outweighs any reason Netflix may have for doing so.”

Originally, Mo’Nique attempted to barter with Netflix, negotiating terms and pay that she deemed worthwhile. Netflix didn’t want to move off the $500,000, and gave the comedian a ‘take it or leave it’ stance.

“In response, Netflix did the opposite. It dug its heels in the ground, refused to negotiate fairly and stood behind its discriminatory offer.”

The initial report goes onto claim that a white comedian believed to be Amy Schumer had a great deal more success campaign and negotiating what she wanted in her Netflix contract.

“In stark contrast, when a white female comedian objected to her offer (given how much lower it was than comparable males), Netflix reconsidered and upped her offer. In short, as this lawsuit shows, Netflix’s treatment of Mo’Nique began with a discriminatory low-ball offer and ended with a blacklisting act of retaliation.”

Mo’Nique confirmed the lawsuit early this week explaining her disposition. The comedian says, “Hey My Loves, I can confirm that today I filed a pay discrimination lawsuit against Netflix. I had a choice to make: I could accept what I felt was pay discrimination or I could stand up for those who came before me and those who will come after me. I chose to stand up. I don’t have any further comment this time, but I appreciate all of your support and love.” We’ll have to wait and see how this all plays out. It’s possible that Mo’Nique may just settle out of court. This news comes from The Jasmine Brand.
