Netflix acquires Nipsey Hussle documentary from director Ava DuVernay
Just days after presenting a tribute to Nipsey Hussle at the Grammy Awards, director Ava DuVernay’s documentary about the late rapper is moving forward at Netflix.
The 47-year-old director’s untitled documentary project on the late rapper (real name Ermias Joseph Asghedom) has landed at Netflix, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Apple was previously on track to pick up the project at one point, but now it is happening at Netflix.

No details were given about the documentary project itself, what the film will be titled, or when Netflix plans to release it.
The filmmaker is no stranger to the documentary format, making her feature debut with 2008’s This Is the Life.
She also directed the hit Netflix documentary 13th, which was nominated for Best Documentary at the Oscars in 2017.

Hussle was fatally shot outside his Marathon Clothing store in Los Angeles on March 31, 2019, passing away at just 33 years of age.
Eric Holder was arrested just days later and charged with the rapper’s murder, and the shooting was believed to be motivated by a personal matter.
The rapper’s death sent shockwaves throughout Los Angeles, with his public memorial held at Staples Center and the funeral procession that went through Los Angeles drawing thousands of people.

Hussle was honored at the Grammys with a touching tribute featuring performances by Meek Mill, DJ Khaled, Roddy Ricch, YG and John Legend.
The rapper also won two posthumous Grammys, Best Rap Performance for his song Racks in the Middle and Best Rap/Sung Performance for Higher.
The Los Angeles City Council also announced on the day of his funeral that the corner of Slauson Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard will be renamed Ermias “Nipsey Hussle” Asghedom Square in the rapper’s honor.

DuVernay is coming off the Netflix mini-series When They See Us, based on the Central Park Five case.
She is also slated to direct the DC Comics adaptation The New Gods for Warner Bros. though it isn’t clear when production will begin.
She is also writing and directing Battle of Versailes, based on the true story of the 1973 Palace of Versailles fashion show where top French designers such as Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Cardin faced of against American newcomers Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, Anne Klein and Halston.
