THOUSANDS of neighbourhoods will be able to reclaim nearby green spaces as part of ‘Pocket Parks’ plans, it has emerged.
Unloved and derelict urban spaces will be transformed as communities bid for a share of a pot worth more than £1 million.
The neglected spaces will be turned into children’s play areas or vegetable patches and paving the way for events to bring neighbours together.
Ministers will make £25,000 for refurbishment of existing parks and £15,000 for developing new green spaces.
Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick said: “We want to improve the mental and physical health of local people by providing a sustainable and affordable sanctuary away from the hustle of urban life.
“That’s why we have launched this fund to encourage projects led by community groups to renovate parks and encourage community activities of all kinds.
“Establishing more pocket parks is part of our wider ambition to ensure that communities have a real sense of identity and place.”
Whitehall has also awarded nearly £10 million for local authorities to better maintain and protect their recreational spaces.
