'My sister-in-law stole my baby name – now she's mad I'm still going to use it'

When it comes to baby names, some people want their little ones to have the most unique moniker, while others might not put too much thought into it.

One new mum recently revealed how she and her husband had spent a while picking out their son’s name and settled on one that would honour two people very special to them.

The woman, who recently gave birth, claims she announced the sex and name of their unborn child in a post on Facebook back in April, alongside a picture of a baby blanket that had the name embroidered on it.

However, one week later, her sister-in-law dropped a major bombshell – she’d secretly had a baby and she’d used the same name they wanted.

In a post on Reddit’s Am I The A**hole forum, the mum explains that the situation was awkward and her husband’s family were not impressed their daughter had stolen the name.

However, as the name meant so much to the couple, they decided that they would continue on with their plan to use it regardless of the sister’s actions.

She wrote: “I had my son a month ago. We had his name chosen early in my pregnancy. It’s a double honour name which kind of came from a unique place (we had two people we wanted to honour, we didn’t go with direct names but names that tied to the people and we happened to truly love the names).

“We announced the sex and the name in a FB post in April with a blanket that had his name embroidered on it. Fast forward a week and my SIL, who nobody knew was expecting, announces she has given birth to a son and the name she had chosen? The very same name we had chosen. It was awkward.”

She continued to say: “My in-laws all asked her what she was thinking. She said she got to give birth first and loved the name so what was the big deal. My husband thought she was nuts and told her she was a d**k for thinking she had ‘claimed’ the name now.

“She said it wasn’t her fault she got there first. I was like it’s fine, we are not changing the name and the cousins can share the same name.

“Well, she’s p***ed that this actually happened. She texted my husband about two days after our son was born asking him what our son’s name is and he told her she knew, we had announced it.

“Cue her texting every member of the family saying how awful we were to the kids and how we were petty and nasty and how I was an a**hole for stealing the name after she used it. Father-in-law told us to ignore her that it will settle down. But she is still p***ed and said we’re only hurting the kids with this.”

The woman then asked the people of Reddit if she was in the wrong for still using the name she had wanted.

More than 2,000 people responded to the post, with many taking her side.

One said: “She’s delusional, NTA. The fact that you stuck to your guns showed that she had ill intentions by picking that name. She was playing chicken and obviously hoped that you’d choose something different… now she’s p***ed you didn’t flinch.”

Another replied: “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Also, my half of my husband’s family, including my husband, is named John and it doesn’t bother him.”

A third added: “I’m 22wks and I can’t even count the number of people who’ve asked what name we’re going with. You’ll find out when they’re born, sucker, I’m not giving you a chance to screw me over!”

Someone else joked: ” I say go for the power move and legally change your name to the same as SIL.”
