Mum ‘names her twins Corona and Covid’ as they’re born in the middle of coronavirus pandemic


MANY parents will be hoping to forget about the pandemic as soon as possible.

But one mum has reportedly been inspired by recent events to name her newborn twins ‘Corona’ and ‘Covid’.

According to the Hindustan Times, Preeti Verma said she gave her son and daughter topical monikers to remind her about the hardships she faced bringing them into the world during the coronavirus lockdown.

The 27-year-old woman, who lives in Chhattisgarh in central India with her husband, revealed that she has named her little boy Covid and little girl Corona.

She explained: “The delivery happened after facing several difficulties and therefore, me and my husband wanted to make the day memorable.

“Indeed the virus is dangerous and life-threatening but its outbreak made people focus on sanitation, hygiene and inculcate other good habits. Thus, we thought about these names.”

Preeti continued: “On late night of March 26, I suddenly experienced severe labour pain and somehow my husband arranged an ambulance operated under 102 Mahtari Express service.

“As no vehicular movement was allowed on roads due to the lockdown, we were stopped by police at various places but they let us go after noticing my condition.

“I was wondering what would happen in the hospital as it was midnight, but fortunately doctors and other staff were very cooperative.”

The mum – who already has a two-year-old daughter – added: “Our relatives, who wanted to reach the hospital, could not make it as bus and train services were stopped due to the lockdown.”

The woman noted that she and her husband may change the babies’ names to something more traditional when they get a bit older.

Shubhra Singh, a spokesman for the Dr BR Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, confirmed that mum and twins were doing well after a complex delivery involving a caesarean section.

India is currently on a 21-day lockdown, a measure affecting an estimated 1.3billion people.

The latest figures show that more than 2,300 people in the country have been diagnosed with the virus with over 50 deaths.
