Mum is horrified when her one-year-old IKEA oven explodes leaving shattered glass all over her kitchen

A MUM has slammed IKEA after her one-year-old oven’s glass door exploded, showering her kitchen in dangerous hot shards.

Emma Clark, from Cockermouth, Cumbria, revealed her relief that her young children were not in the room when the appliance shattered.

The shards of glass that exploded from the oven were so hot that they scorched the kitchen floor tiles, which had recently been installed for £600.

Having set the oven to self-cleaning mode and leaving it to it while she was out the room, the 37-year-old took to Facebook to reveal how she heard a ‘loud bang’.

She wrote: “IKEA’s Mattradtion Oven. Less than a year old and the inner door just exploded sending hot glass out through the bottom and across the floor.

“I rang the number in the booklet only to be told that it ‘wasn’t one of their ovens’ and that I should call the same number tomorrow.

“Thankfully my kids weren’t in the room at the time.”

Emma admitted she feared that her two children, aged six and three, could have been burned or cut as the oven exploded.

She said: “It was a huge shock. I was worried as nothing like this has happened before. I was just relieved that nobody was hurt.”

An IKEA spokesman admitted today that the tempered glass used in the appliance, which cost £375 and are made by Whirlpool, has a ‘tendency to explode’.

He added that the company was looking into the incident as a ‘product safety issue’ over the ‘safety glass’ that is known to easily shatter.

In 2017 the consumer watchdog Which? produced an article highlighting the potential dangers of tempered glass doors.

Which? wrote: “Tempered glass is thermally strengthened by heating it to more than 600°C, followed by rapid cooling. The outer layer of the glass cools more quickly, creating a compressed outer layer. This works to protect the inner part of the glass, which cools more slowly.”

“However, tempered glass is still brittle and can shatter. When it does, it tends to do so suddenly and violently”

Despite being aware of the product dangers, the IKEA spokesman confirmed that there were no plans to change its oven doors.
