Egypt fully intend to select Mohamed Salah for their Olympic squad this summer with the Liverpool forward eager to take part in the tournament.

Football at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Games is set to get underway on 21 July with the final currently scheduled for 7 August in Japan.

Men’s teams are restricted to three players over the age of 24 with Egypt coach Shawky Gharib intent on picking Salah to help his side in their bid to win the competition for the first time.

Gharib told AFP: ‘I have made it public that I’d like to have him on board in our Olympic campaign and he hasn’t refused, which means he also wants to play with us.

‘Salah’s participation in the Olympics is endorsed by the state, represented by the Sports Ministry and the Egyptian Football Association, in our concerted effort to garner an Olympic medal in football for the first time.’

Gharib added Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will have his say in the final decision but underlined both his and Salah’s determination to win gold.

‘Salah, as one of the three best players internationally, will lift the Pharoahs to a whole new level in the Olympics, Gharib said.

‘His presence with us will make a huge difference.’

The 2021-22 Premier League season is now set to begin on 14 August but Salah’s participation in the Games would see him miss pre-season.

Liverpool could already be heading for another club vs country row with Netherlands boss Frank de Boer set to call Virgil van Dijk up to his Euros squad.

The Dutchman has missed most of the season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in October with Klopp and Liverpool’s medical staff said to be ‘horrified’ over his plans to represent his country this summer after such a lengthy layoff.
