San Diego Padres rookie shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. departed Sunday’s game against the Washington Nationals with a hamstring injury that occurred when he awkwardly did the splits.

Tatis reached for a throw while covering second base in the 10th inning and was trying to keep his right foot on the bag. His left foot was sliding forward as he stretched to catch a high throw from pitcher Matt Wisler and he unexpectedly found himself in a full split with the right foot coming off the bag.
Tatis laid on his stomach as club trainers worked on him. He eventually got up and slowly walked off the field.
“I think everybody saw what happened on the field,” manager Andy Green told reporters after the Padres lost the game 7-6 in 11 innings. “We’re hoping he’s OK. We’ll find out in time. He seemed to be in pretty good spirits. We’ll find out how severe or how mild it is. …
—Reigning National League MVP Christian Yelich left Sunday’s game against the host New York Mets with lower back discomfort following the top of the fifth inning.
Yelich singled in the fourth inning and was retired on a double play. He was replaced by Ben Gamel in right field to begin the bottom of the fifth inning. It was unclear when Yelich was injured.
“He’s a little sore right now,” manager Craig Counsell said after the game, adding that Yelich is day-to-day. Counsell hopes to give Yelich a day off on Monday, as the Colorado Rockies visit.
—The New York Yankees lost second baseman DJ LeMahieu and third baseman Gio Urshela to injuries during Sunday’s game in San Francisco against the Giants.
LeMahieu, who fouled a ball of his right knee on Friday, left Sunday’s game before the start of the bottom of the third inning, walking gingerly. The team announced he has right knee inflammation.
In the top of the fifth, Urshela was struck on his left hand with a 1-2 pitch from Giants’ right-hander Nick Vincent, fell to the ground and exited the game after being attended to by a trainer. Urshela was replaced by pinch runner Cameron Maybin. Maybin was inserted as the left fielder, and Tyler Wade moved to third base. The team announced a few hours after the game that imaging tests on Urshela’s hand showed no broken bones.
—St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Alex Reyes will be sidelined at least three weeks after punching a wall and breaking the pinkie finger on his non-throwing hand.
The incident happened Thursday when Reyes experienced a rough outing for Triple-A Memphis, giving up three runs, three hits and two walks over 2 2/3 innings.
Reyes was demoted to Memphis in early April after going 0-1 with a 15.00 ERA in four relief appearances for St. Louis. He is 1-0 with a 2.61 ERA in five appearances (two starts) at Memphis.
—The Washington Nationals placed veteran first baseman Ryan Zimmerman on the 10-day injured list due to plantar fasciitis in his right foot.
Zimmerman, 34, injured the foot on Tuesday after leaping to catch a throw in a game against the Colorado Rockies. He was feeling pain on Friday and Saturday and underwent an MRI exam on Sunday.
Also, third baseman Anthony Rendon (elbow) was out of the starting lineup for the sixth time in seven days and could be headed to the IL. He is batting .356 with six homers and 18 RBIs in 20 games.
—The Chicago White Sox placed rookie left fielder Eloy Jimenez on the 10-day injured list with a high right ankle sprain.
Jimenez was injured while attempting to make a catch at the fence during the third inning of Chicago’s 12-11 win against the Detroit Tigers on Friday night.
The 22-year-old is batting .241 with three homers, eight RBIs and 25 strikeouts in 21 games.
—The Atlanta Braves acquired veteran left-hander Jerry Blevins from the Oakland Athletics for cash considerations.
Blevins, 35, signed a $1.5 million minor-league deal with the A’s in February and posted a 1.69 ERA in seven bullpen appearances at Triple-A Las Vegas.
The reliever was 3-2 with a 4.85 ERA and one save in 64 games with the New York Mets in 2018. Over 12 seasons with Oakland (2007-13), the Washington Nationals (2014) and Mets (2015-18), Blevins is 29-13 with a 3.52 ERA and six saves in 564 games.
—The Minnesota Twins placed Willians Astudillo on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain.
Astudillo suffered the injury while running the bases during Saturday afternoon’s 9-2 victory against the Baltimore Orioles.
Off to a hot start, the 27-year-old Astudillo is batting .327 with two homers, four doubles, seven RBIs and 11 runs scored in 16 games this season.
—The New York Mets designated struggling catcher Travis d’Arnaud for assignment. After hitting .087 in 10 games with just two singles and two RBIs in 25 plate appearances.
“It’s almost like everything he’s doing is not working,” Mets manager Mickey Callaway told reporters after the 30-year-old d’Arnaud was booed by New York fans in Saturday’s 8-6 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.
On Saturday, d’Arnaud, who is coming back from Tommy John surgery, got thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double and allowed a passed ball.
