MKR: The Rivals is facing the axe after being destroyed by MAFS

Channel Seven’s MKR trainwreck: How the cooking show is facing the AXE as it’s destroyed by Married At First Sight and is even beaten by SBS’ Great Australian Railway Journeys

After a decade on the air, My Kitchen Rules is facing the chopping block after its latest season opened to dismal ratings.

Despite a multi-million dollar marketing campaign, Seven’s once-unbeatable cooking show has been destroyed by Channel Nine’s Married At First Sight.

But most embarrassing of all, MKR: The Rivals was actually beaten by the premiere of Great Australian Railway Journeys on SBS on Tuesday night.

The ratings are so bad that TV Blackbox editor Robert McKnight predicts that My Kitchen Rules will soon be cancelled.

‘There won’t be any more of the show. You might as well write the eulogy and prepare the coffin… it will not be back again,’ McKnight told News.com.au.

‘I don’t think anyone expected this kind of devastation. I think it comes back to the fact they launched it up against the Australian Open final [on Sunday night]. That really, really hurt them.

‘Can there be any recovery? I really don’t think so.’

MKR: The Rivals attracted just 428,000 metro viewers on Wednesday, which was less than half of Married At First Sight’s audience.

MAFS was watched by 1.014 million people in the five capital cities, marking the show’s third consecutive day of million-plus ratings.

In fact, Nine’s social experiment had more viewers than My Kitchen Rules and Channel 10’s Survivor: All Stars combined.

Despite an aggressive marketing campaign for MKR: The Rivals, the culinary show debuted to just 498,000 metro viewers on Sunday.

This was partly because it was up against the Australian Open Men’s Final.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Channel Seven for comment.

The decline of My Kitchen Rules began in March 2019, when the franchise’s audience hit an all-time low while up against Married At First Sight.

At the time, MKR judge Manu Feildel said that MAFS was an immoral show that ‘brought out the worst in people.’

‘I think it’s sad that we’ve sunk that far… We enjoy relationships falling apart. How is that entertainment?’ he said.
