The Alsatian-Labrador cross managed to help her back on to the board so she could float safely before he swam back to the shore to fetch his owner.

It happened in Malibu, California, off a beach where some of TV’s Baywatch was filmed, including Pamela Anderson’s run-by-the- Pacific opening scene.

Driver — Oscar nominated in 1997 for Good Will Hunting — said: “I’d bust my rib, and the only thing about that is you can’t get a breath in.

“And my neighbour’s amazing dog  . . .  basically came and started trying to get me out.

“He was trying to sort of grab me and, like, nose me back on to my board. He was amazing.”

She went on: “The dog alerted him (the neighbour) that I was in trouble, because I was out by myself.”

Driver told the Table Manners podcast that her son, Henry, 15, had inherited her love of surfing.
