Miley Cyrus references her split from Liam Hemsworth in her VMAs performance

Last night’s MTV VMAs served up some serious talking points (anyone else watching Taylor Swift’s rendition of You Need To Calm Down on repeat?), but unsurprisingly it was Miley Cyrus who stole the show. She rocked up with her rumoured girlfriend Kaitlynn Carter, debuted her new post break-up tattoo that displayed the lyrics: “My head was feeling scared, but my heart was feeling free”, AND referenced her breakup from Liam Hemsworth as she performed her latest single, Slide Away.

Dressed in a skimpy cut-out dress from the Tom Ford X Gucci 1997 collection, Miley belted out a performance of her newest single released only two weeks ago. But in last night’s rendition, the singer-songwriter changed the lyrics from “Move on, we’re not 17/I’m not who I used to be/You say that everything changed/You’re right, we’re grown now,” to “You’re right, I’m grown now.”

The world has been quick to criticise Miley for throwing shade at Liam in the single that hints heavily at the demise of their relationship, but at the end of the day, she’s just a normal girl going through a very public breakup. Give her a break, people.

This was Miley’s first performance since her split from her husband of seven months, Liam Hemsworth, earlier this month. “Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time,” a rep for the Hollywood IT couple said. “Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers.”

The subtle reference to the couple’s break-up in her VMAs performance follows on from a sentimental post the singer uploaded to Instagram. Standing on a mountain in the Dolomites, Miley wrote: “Don’t fight evolution, because you will never win. Like the mountain I am standing on top of, which was once under water, connected with Africa, change is inevitable” she wrote alongside an image of her posing in the Dolomites. “I was taught to respect the planet and its process and I am committed to doing the same with my own.”

You do you, Miley.
