Mikel Arteta is disappointed with Arsenal’s lack of progress since he took over as head coach and is reportedly planning a major shake-up that could see three stars leave the club.

Although the Gunners are unbeaten in their last seven matches in all competitions, they have picked up just one Premier League victory during that run and were held to a frustrating goalless draw against Burnley last time out.

That result left Arsenal in 10th place in the table, 10 points adrift of fourth spot and closer to the relegation zone than Champions League qualification.

According to The Sun, Arteta thought the team would have progressed more than they have and believes his underperforming side needs ‘major surgery’ in the summer.

But Arsenal will need to sell before they can fund such a massive transformation and a trio of the club’s biggest names – Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mesut Ozil – could be on the chopping block as a result.

All three are out of contract in 18 months’ time and Arteta is willing to cash in rather than risk losing them for nothing.

Arsenal head of football Raul Sanllehi has also made it clear to the Spanish coach that no players will be allowed to run down their contracts, as happened with Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey previously.

Contract talks are on hold until the summer, with the players keen to see if the club can qualify for the Champions League – most probably through the Europa League.

Aubameyang is the player Arteta would like to keep most and he still hopes the Gabon striker can be convinced to extend his stay at the Emirates, though the 30-year-old is aware of interest from Barcelona and other top clubs.

If Aubameyang commits, it will likely hasten Lacazette’s departure – and vice versa – while getting Ozil’s £350,000-a-week salary off the wage bill would also free up funds for new signings.

Arteta’s overhaul of the Arsenal squad is not expected to stop there, with defenders Sokratis, David Luiz and Shkodran Mustafi all entering the final 18 months of their contracts and uncertain of their futures under Arteta.
