Mike Thalassitis: Love Island stars criticise show for lack of support after death of 26-year-old contestant

Love Island stars have criticised the show’s bosses after former contestant Mike Thalassitis was found dead in woods near his home in Essex.

His co-stars today hit out at the show for not giving contestants enough support when they leave to deal with their sudden rise to fame.

His former Love Island co-star Dom Lever said contestants need more support when they leave the villa.

He said: “You get a psychological evaluation before and after you go on the show but hands down once you are done on the show you don’t get any support unless you’re number one.”

Malin Andersson, who lost her daughter earlier this year, said she “wouldn’t have been able to cope” after the show if she didn’t have a “strong head on her”.

Former Love Island contestants have paid tribute to Mike Thalassitis (PA)

“Enough is enough” she wrote online.

“I got flowers from the producers when my daughter died. No support, or help.”

Actress Sheridan Smith wrote online: “This should be a massive wake up call, I feel sick, reach out, sometimes to the most confident friend. We can only learn & try to change.”

Kady McDermott, who also appeared on the show, said: “Hopefully going forward reality shows will help more with the aftermath of being on one, because I can say it definitely didn’t happen after my series when lots of us needed it. Peoples lives change over night and no one can mentally be prepared for it. The good and the bad.”

Love Island host Caroline Flack said Mike was a “total gentleman”. She said: ‘Mike… you were a total gentleman… I won’t forget that … it’s so sad …you will be missed. RIP.”

Fellow Love Island contestant Olivia Atwood posted on Instagram: “Literally don’t know what to say. Another one gone too young. Thinking of mike’s family and friends at the horrendous time. you will be missed terribly.”

Former Love Island contestant Montana Brown said Mr Thalassitis had been in a “dark place” in recent months as she paid tribute.

She wrote on Instagram: “Now I know you were in a dark place a few months back and I thought you were past it and that you were on the up,

“I just don’t know how I didn’t notice… I am absolutely heartbroken that I couldn’t help you.”

ITV said in a statement: “Everyone at ITV2 and Love Island are shocked and saddened by this terrible news. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Mike’s family and friends at this very sad time.”

His manager confirmed the shock news of his death yesterday. The cause of his death is not known.
