Mexican police department places order for 15 Tesla Cybertrucks to add to its arsenal

The mayor of Ciudad Valles in Mexico has ordered 15 Tesla Cybertrucks to use in the town’s police department

  • The pre-orders cost the mayor the equivalent of one month’s salary, or $1,500
  • The city will use the trucks for the police force and trash collection
  • He believes the savings is maintenance costs will justify the expense

Tesla’s recent Cybertruck announcement has been division, but the company has at least one unlikely new fan: the Ciudad Valles police department.

The mayor of the small town in the central Mexican state of San Luis Potosí (estimated population: 176,000), announced he’s ordered fifteen new Cybertrucks for the city’s police force.

Adrián Esper Cárdenas says he reserved the trucks with the equivalent of one month of his personal salary, $1,500 or $100 per truck, which is what Tesla is asking for pre-orders.

The order is for 10 of the mid-range, two-motor Cybertrucks, and five of the more high-end, three-motor models, according to a report in Mexico News Daily.

At the standard MSRP for each model, respectively $49,900 and $69,900, that would total an estimated $848,500.

‘We’ll take a photo and send it to Elon Musk, see if he gives us a discount,’ Cárdenas joked at a press conference announcing the order.

Cárdenas claimed the expense would be worth it for the savings in maintenance costs, which he estimated could be as high as $1.2million (24 million pesos).

The trucks also appealed to Cárdenas for their use in other municipal functions, including trash collection, construction, and general maintenance.

‘It’s not about speed, because we don’t want speed,’ he said.

‘What we’re looking for is torque in order to haul water pipes, the garbage trailers. They’ll have twice the loads of a normal truck.’

The Ciudad Valles police force isn’t the only law enforcement agency that’s shown an interest in Tesla’s divisive truck.

Last week, the Dubai Police shared a render of a Cybertruck mockup with the city’s police insignia painted on its body.

The city’s police force uses a number of luxury vehicles, including the Bugatti Veyron, Aston Martin One-77, Bentley Continental GT, BMW i8, and Porsche Panamera.

Tesla says they have so far received more than 250,000 pre-orders for Cybertruck.
