Men's and women's archery teams qualify Great Britain for Tokyo 2020

Patrick Huston reached the last 32 at the Rio 2016 Games

Great Britain’s men’s and women’s teams have qualified a full quota of three places for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics by making the quarter-finals of the World Championships in the Netherlands.

Patrick Archer, Tom Hall and Alexander Wise made up the men’s recurve team, with Sarah Bettles, Bryony Pitman and Naomi Folkard forming the women’s trio.

The men beat Japan in the second round and the women defeated Italy.

Both teams have claimed one of eight places available for next year’s Games.

The final teams of three, who will also be able to compete in the individual competition in Tokyo, will be selected by Archery GB closer to the start of the Olympics.

Currently Northern Ireland’s Huston is the highest ranked of the three male GB archers in the world at 55th, with Hall 66th and Wise 155th.

The GB men will face number one seeds Korea in the quarter-finals of the World Championships on Thursday, with the GB women taking on Germany.

In the individual recurve Huston was beaten in the second round by Russian Erdem Irdyneev. The Belfast archer reached the last 32 at the Rio Olympics three years ago.

“You don’t feel the competition when you’re there… this is everything you’ve trained for. I think the fact that it’s the biggest event that you’ve been preparing for gives you the energy and gives you the strength,” said Hall after his team’s progression to the last eight.

Pitman commented: “It’s pretty amazing , this is what we’ve worked so hard to do . The fact that we didn’t do it four years ago and struggled in the year leading up to the Games, to actually have a full team, men and women a year ahead of the Games is amazing.”
