Mayans MC co-creator Kurt Sutter fired by FX

When Disney first acquired Fox, including Fox cable TV network, FX, it was unknown how the image conscious conglomerate would interact with some of its new acquisitions more colourful characters. Now we may have a better idea as FX has dismissed talented, yet intense and mercurial Mayans MC co-showrunner Kurt Sutter from his showrunning duties.

Variety reports that FX President John Landgraf and Disney TV Studios chairman Dana Walden made the decision directly following an investigation into complaints made about Sutter’s behaviour on set. There is no word on what said behaviour entailed but Sutter is well known to have an at times abrasive and difficult approach to running a TV show. In a letter to the cast and crew of Mayans MC obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Sutter describes himself as an “abrasive dick.” The letter can be read in its entirety over at THR but a choice passage includes:

“This morning I was fired by Dana Walden and John Landgraf for all the complaints levied against me. Not the way I wanted to end my 18 year relationship with FX. At least being fired for being an abrasive dick is on brand. I deeply apologise if I’ve made people feel less than or unsupported. My intention was literally the opposite. But clearly I’ve not been paying attention. My arrogance and chronic distraction has created wreckage. Just know, I adore this cast and crew.”

Sutter has had a creative relationship with FX dating back to his time as a writer on FX drama The Shield. Sutter created and produced the long-running motorcycle drama, Sons of Anarchy, for the network, upon which spinoff Mayans MC is based. He also acted in Sons of Anarchy as the increasingly-abused biker gang member Otto Delaney and created The Bastard Executioner for FX. Sutter announced at the beginning of Mayans MC season 2 that he would step away from the show should it get a third season and cede control over to co-showrunner Elgin James.

Though Sutter’s relationship with FX may be over at the moment, THR reports that the overall deal the creator signed with 20th Century Fox Television still appears to be intact.

Mayans MC season 2 is still currently airing. There is no early indication as to whether it will get a season 3.
