Eight games took place on Saturday – making for an action-packed Match of the Day programme tonight (BBC One, 10.30pm).
The first of those matches saw Premier League table-toppers Liverpool earn a seventh straight win by overcoming Sheffield United.
The stubborn Blades’ resistance was ended when goalkeeper Dean Henderson, on loan from Manchester United, spilled a Georginio Wijnaldum volley through his legs for the only goal of the game.
Reigning champions Manchester City were in action later in the evening, facing Everton at Goodison Park.
And City too were made to work hard for their three points, but claimed a win to keep Liverpool’s lead at the top to five points as Riyad Mahrez curled in a sublime free-kick and Raheem Sterling scored off the underside of the crossbar in the second-half for a 3-1 win.
Of the other big six clubs in action, Chelsea claimed their first league win at Stamford Bridge under Frank Lampard, and their first clean sheet of the season, as they overcame Brighton.
London rivals Tottenham were also victorious on home soil in a dramatic encounter with Southampton.
Aston Villa were held to a 2-2 draw by Burnley while another claret-and-blue-clad team, in West Ham, saw their clash with Bournemouth finish with the same scoreline.
Elsewhere, Crystal Palace climbed into the top half of the table by beating Norwich City at Selhurst Park.
And Watford’s winless run went on as they suffered defeat to Wolves, who in turn claimed their first triumph of the campaign.
Of the remaining fixtures of the weekend, Leicester host struggling Newcastle on Sunday afternoon (4.30pm).
Monday night sees Manchester United welcome Arsenal to Old Trafford in an intriguing showdown (8pm).
