Mason Greenwood is on Wayne Rooney’s level, claims Andy Cole

Mason Greenwood is a ‘special talent’ who is already on the level of Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney at the same age.

That’s the view of Andy Cole, who believes the 18-year-old can surpass fellow strikers Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial at Old Trafford.

Greenwood has netted 16 times this term and his performances have validated Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s decision to sell Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan for £72m.

Rooney joined the club as an 18-year-old in 2004 but he was already an established Premier League star, having spent the last two seasons as a regular at Everton.

The Derby County captain joined United on the back of a scintillating Euro 2004 campaign with England but Cole believes that Greenwood is just as good as Rooney was at that age.

‘A special talent,’ Cole told the Athletic.

‘He’ll get better and better. He scores with his left foot and right foot. He has the potential to surpass Marcus and Anthony.

‘I’m not even sure if he’s that fast but 16 goals at 18 is incredible. When I was his age, I wasn’t close to Arsenal’s first team.

‘This is Wazza (Wayne Rooney) level. He wasn’t even expected to be in the team this season.’

Greenwood has been one of the stars of the Premier League since the resumption following a three-month break.

The teenager has scored four goals in seven matches since replay resumed and he’s now a marked man, with a clear change in how opponents are treating him in recent matches.
