Man Utd player ratings vs Watford: Rashford on target but which surprise star earns an 8?

United moved back up to fourth in the Premier League with a vital 2-1 win over Watford at Old Trafford.

The Hornets dominated for much of the match but Marcus Rashford broke the deadlock with a neat clipped finish against the run of play.

And Anthony Martial doubled the advantage midway through the second half as Solskjaer tasted victory in his first match since being appointed permanent manager.

Abdoulaye Doucoure added a late consolation for Javi Gracia’s side after playing a neat one-two with Isaac Success but Watford failed to nab an equaliser.

Express Sport has rated how the Manchester United players performed against Watford, but do you agree?

Manchester United player ratings against Watford – Premier League

GK: David de Gea – 7

Worked hard by an ambitious Hornets side and made several saves as Javi Gracia’s outfit peppered the Spaniard’s goal.

Not much chance with the goal but kept his team in contention for much of the match.

RB: Ashley Young – 5

Careless in possession and at times looked the weak link in a resolute rearguard.

CB: Chris Smalling – 7

Excellent display under a serious amount of pressure.

Dealt well with the aerial threat of Troy Deeney.

CB: Phil Jones – 8

Barely put a foot wrong on his return to the side and has staked his claim for more match action under Solskjaer.

LB: Luke Shaw – 8

Bombed on all afternoon and got his reward when his pass was tucked away by Rashford.

CM: Nemanja Matic – 5

Out of sorts and bypassed for much of the match as Watford dominated midfield.

CM: Ander Herrera – 6

Effort can’t be faulted but wasn’t alone in proving ineffective against Etienne Capoue and Doucoure.

CM: Paul Pogba – 5

Frustrating, with the Frenchman busy but unable to find his passing range.

RAM: Juan Mata – 5

Part of a fluid attack and drifted around looking for space, although the veteran was anonymous for much of the match.

LAM: Anthony Martial – 6

Had a penalty appeal waved away and worked Ben Foster with a drive from 10 yards out.

Like Pogba, his passing was sometimes lacking but the winger beat the offside trap brilliantly and got his reward with a bundled finish to secure the points.

ST: Marcus Rshford – 8

Perfectly suited to playing on the counter and showed a clinical streak with his dinked finish past Foster to open the scoring.

SUB: Jesse Lingard (on for Herrera, 63 mins) – 7

Made an instant impact with an assist for Martial.

SUB: Andreas Pereira (on for Mata, 63 mins) – 5

Booked for time wasting.

SUB: Marcos Rojo (on for Martial, 77 mins) – 5

Vital minutes.
