Manchester United could be set to end the January transfer window with no new signings as there are reportedly not any deals that are even close to being finalised.
United have been searching for a new centre back, centre midfielder and striker this month, and they have been linked with a whole host of names.
Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes appeared the most likely newcomer, and the clubs are said to still be in talks over a deal for the 25-year-old, but there is no guarantee that a move will be agreed before the window closes on Friday.
PSG forward Edinson Cavani was another possibility, but the Uruguayan now appears to favour a move to Atletico Madrid.
And according to The Athletic there is a real possibility that United will have to wait until the summer in order to sign anybody.
The lack of action in the market would come as a huge blow to their manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who is known to be desperate for more options in his squad.
Discussing the club’s dealings recently, Solskjaer said: “For me it’s all about understanding the club – and I believe in the structure that’s been put in place here.
“In the time I have been here, we have spent a lot of resources on scouting, recruiting and researching players to make sure we are comfortable when we sign them.
“The club won’t sign a player without me accepting it. It’s down to me to say yes or no when the club finds a target.”
It remains to be seen whether there is anybody new lining up in a United shirt in their two games this week, with their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Manchester City on Wednesday followed by a home match against Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday.
