Man Utd and Liverpool 'in talks' over Kai Havertz transfer but face Man City competition

Manchester United and Liverpool have held talks over hot transfer property Kai Havertz – but face competition from Manchester City .

Havertz has been linked with United and Liverpool for some time, but according to reports from Germany they are among six clubs who have spoken to the Bayer Leverkusen star’s representatives about a deal.

City are another of the clubs interested, with manager Pep Guardiola needing to strengthen his midfield as David Silva is in his final season at the club.

La Liga rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona are also keen on the 20-year-old, as well as Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, according to German publication Bild .

Havertz smashed in 20 goals last season as Leverkusen finished fourth in the Bundesliga and qualified for the Champions League.

The Germany international has three goals in 16 appearances so far this season, with Bild reporting that Leverkusen’s asking price for Havertz is £111million.

Bayern may have the advantage in the race to sign him, with Havertz himself saying last month: “If you want to be a star in Germany, you can’t go wrong with Bayern.”

But Bild has previously reported that he is open to the idea of signing for United, saying he is ‘excited by the project’.

Havertz has also previously been linked with interest from Tottenham and Chelsea .

The 20-year-old has earned seven caps for Germany

However, Sky Sports has claimed that he is enjoying his time with Leverkusen and wants to see out the campaign with his current employers. He has already made 125 appearances for Leverkusen despite his young age.

Havertz is hoping to recapture his goalscoring form of last season over the remainder of the campaign.

“Last season was like a benchmark for me, so it’s been difficult to keep pace with this,” he said. “This was my aim, and I started this season well with two goals in the first two games.

“It’s normal for a young player like me to then experience a small dip, but these are phases that shape you as a player and as a person.
