Inter Milan centre-back Milan Skriniar has described Manchester United superstar Bruno Fernandes as one of the best team-mates he has ever had, after the pair spent a year together at Sampdoria.

Fernandes has made a stunning impact since arriving at Manchester United from Sporting in January, almost instantly becoming a key player in their starting line-up and sparking an impressive up-turn in form.

The Red Devils are unbeaten since the arrival of the Portuguese, keeping hopes of Champions League qualification alive, along with the possibility of winning the Europa League and FA Cup – if these competitions come to a conclusion.

Fernandes is continuing the fine form he showed at Sporting from 2017-20, and previously at Sampdoria, where he played with Skriniar for just one season, 2016-17.

Clearly the midfielder made an impression on the defender, because of all the players he has played with, Skriniar singled out the United man when asked about notable team-mates.

‘I think one of my best team-mates was Bruno Fernandes,’ Skriniar said in a Q&A on Inter’s official website.

‘I always liked him back from our time together at Sampdoria.’

Skriniar and Fernandes could be residing in the same city again soon, with Manchester City showing significant interest in the 25-year-old defender.

United have reportedly been interested in him in the past, as have Real Madrid and Barcelona, but City are now looking to push ahead with a move for the Slovakian after their troubles at centre-back over this season.

After the departure of Vincent Kompany last year, the injury problems of Aymeric Laporte and form struggles of John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi, the Premier League champions have looked ropy in the middle of defence, with Fernandinho regularly filling in there.

They are expected to dip into the transfer market to help solve this problem and Skriniar is near the top of their wishlist.

The powerful defender has started 25 of Inter’s 26 Serie A games this season as they battle Juventus and Lazio for the title.
