Madonna cancels concert 45 minutes before she was due to perform

Madonna cancelled a show in Lisbon just 45 minutes before she was due to go on stage, in the latest in a run of delays and cancellations on her current tour.

An email was sent to fans confirming the show’s cancellation at 7.45pm on Sunday (19 January), with Madonna having been scheduled to arrive on stage at 8.30pm.

“We regret to inform you that Madonna is unable to perform this evening,” read the email.

On Instagram, the pop icon apologised for pulling out of the show. “Thank you again Lisbon! Sorry I had to cancel tonight but I must listen to my body and rest!! That white port got me through the rest of the show! See you on Tuesday fingers crossed.”

Response among fans to Madonna’s cancellation was mixed. “Get well my queen!!!!!!,” one wrote on Instagram. “We love you forever.”

However, another added: “This is unfair on your fans sorry! An hour before doors open! This will happen in London too? Hope not! Unfair Madonna and I’m a massive fan of yours! Cancel in advance please.”

The axed Lisbon date marked the eighth show on her current Madame X Tour to be cancelled. The star has recently been suffering from an unspecified injury.

In November, Madonna announced the cancellation of three Boston dates, citing “overwhelming pain”.

That same month she was also sued by a fan over claims that she started a concert two hours later than originally billed.

Madonna is due to begin a 15-date London residency at the Palladium on 27 January.
