Lizzo gets emotional as she plays Madison Square Garden for the first time

She shot up to stardom practically overnight this year thanks to her catchy single Truth Hurts.

And now Lizzo – whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson – is a headliner for this evening’s Jingle Ball at Madison Square Garden in New York. 

Before the show, the 31-year-old star looked flawless while posing backstage in a form-fitting number ahead of one of her final performances of the year before taking the stage in a Santa Claus costume. 

The singer got emotional while on stage as she looked back on her amazing year as she remembered always hoping to play at the arena.

‘I’ve always dreamed of performing at Madison Square Garden. You made my dreams come true tonight. I’ve never performed for this many people before,’ she said before getting filled with emotion.

‘Thank you for accepting me for who I am. If 20,000 people can accept me for who I am, the whole world can accept you for who you are.’

‘Don’t ever let someone tell you what you can’t be, cause you the juice,’ she said before her segue into the next song.

While on the carpet, she wore a one shoulder design dress with a black and white checkered pattern.

The dress had a gigantic bow matching the dresses pattern propped up on the shoulder with the sleeve and was definitely eye catching.

When it came time for her to take the stage, Lizzo came out in a Santa costume complete with white fur and a large black belt. 

Inspiring: During her set, she stopped to tell fans that if the world can accept her, than the world can accept all of her fans

Another big name who took the stage this evening is former One Direction member Niall Horan, 26, who recently recalled his first interaction with the singer.

While on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday he revealed that Lizzo used a pick-up line on him when they first met.

‘I was in London doing a radio performance in the studio,’ he recalled to the talk show host.

‘She was coming in to do an interview in the studio as well and someone said, ‘Oh, Lizzo’s here! She’d love to meet you.”

‘And literally, without missing a beat, she just went, ‘You can smash this!” 

‘And I was just like, ‘Fair play,” he recalled. ‘I actually started blushing myself!’
