Liverpool handed big fitness boost ahead of Brighton clash this weekend

Jurgen Klopp has been given some respite from his injury nightmare, with news that skipper Jordan Henderson is back in training.

And that could not have come at a better time for the Liverpool manager, with a midfield crisis coming hot on the heels of a defensive horror story which decimated his first choice back four.

Klopp was down to just two senior fit midfielders against Atalanta on Wednesday night, with teenager Curtis Jones called into action alongside veterans James Milner and Gini Wijnaldum.

But on Thursday Henderson did a full session with those players who didn’t appear on Wednesday night, after doing two tailored sessions earlier in the week, as he recovers fully from a muscle injury he picked up on England duty.

Jurgen Klopp will welcome his skipper back

If he comes through that session with no reaction, he will train with the full squad on Friday.

And that should be enough to return him to the starting line up for the visit to Brighton on Saturday lunch time.

Klopp’s midfield has been hit by problems for Thiago, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Xherdan Shaqiri, who are all on the way back from injury, and also Fabinho, who has just recovered from a hamstring issue, but is required in defence.

The Liverpool manager has just one of his first choice back four available for the Brighton game, with Andy Robertson coming through half an hour as a substitute against Atalanta.

Virgil van Dijk are facing season-long absences with long term injuries, but Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to be back in training within the next week.

Klopp will be seeking a response having seen his side outplayed by Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday night as they lost 2-0.
