Liverpool cancel Dejan Lovren transfer after Roma's attempt to change deal

Dejan Lovren’s proposed transfer to Roma looks to be over after it was reported that Liverpool have called off negotiations for the centre-back.

With Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip now ahead of him in the pecking order at Liverpool, Lovren is said to be looking for a move in search of first-team football.

Roma were allegedly close to sealing a £23million move , but according to reports this has now fallen through.

Journalist Neil Jones posted on his personal Twitter saying: “No Roma move for Dejan Lovren, Liverpool have called off negotiations over a £15m deal. Roma looked to secure a loan deal which LFC rejected.”

Melissa Reddy added: “The Serie A side failed to come up with an official proposal after indicating they would be willing to pay over £15m. Instead, they used Italian intermediaries to try and negotiate a small loan fee to sign the defender.”

It appears the Reds are only happy to sell Lovren on a permanent deal rather than loaning him out, and with Roma seemingly only willing to take the player on a short-term basis, negotiations have broken down.

The news will come as a blow for Lovren, who could be set for a season on the bench unless Liverpool find another buyer.

The 30-year-old has been at Anfield since 2014, when he was signed from Southampton for a fee of £8.5m.
