Most find it more calming than a playlist or the song variety on a radio.

The Entertainment Retailers Association poll said 83 per cent use LPs to help relax.

Only reading and binge- eating fared better at helping adults chill “a lot”.

Three-quarters said playing LPs lifts mood, said the poll of 2,019 ahead of National Album Day on Saturday.

Kim Bayley, from the ERA, said: “British music fans are effectively self-medicating with their favourite albums.

“Reading and album-listening seem to have similar benefits and given the concerns about obesity, both are probably better for us than comfort eating.”

Geoff Taylor, of the British Phonographic Industry, said: “Music is a wonderful way to relax, but its benefits can go much deeper when the listener really takes the time to slow down and immerse themselves in the whole album as the songwriter intended.”

Dr Julia Jones, who studies music’s effects on health, said playing a “low- tempo relaxing album” before bed could switch the listener into “sleep mode”, raising chances of a good kip.
