Lionel Messi injury: Barcelona star suffers PUBIC PAIN on Argentina duty – will miss match

It was not a game to remember for Messi as Argentina lost 3-1 to Venezuela on a night where he picked up an injury.

According to a statement released by the Argentine FA, the 31-year-old is suffering from bilateral pubic pain.

Messi had not played for his country since the World Cup in Russia, when they scraped out of the group stages to then be knocked out 4-3 in the next round by the eventual winners, France.

Following continued criticism of his performances for his country he took a self-imposed eight-month exile from playing for Argentina, which saw him miss six friendlies.

His return to the international side was welcomed by Argentina’s coach ahead of the game.

“It’s a joy for me and for everyone that he’s back – we’re all very happy,” said Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni said ahead of kick off.

However, Messi’s return on a Friday night was far from a cause for celebration.

Venezuela had only beaten Argentina once in their 23 previous encounters, but goals from Salomon Rondon, Jhon Murillo and Josef Martinez gave them an historic win at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.

Lautaro Martinez scored Argentina’s only goal of the game as he finished off a wonderful counter attack.

After the final whistle the Inter Milan striker admitted there is a lot of room for improvement if Argentina want to make an impact in the Copa America in June.

“In the first half we created chances but they scored twice when we made mistakes,” Martinez said.

“In the second half we did well and moved the ball about but they got that penalty. We need to keep improving.”

Messi played 90 minutes against Venezuela but pain in his groin means he will miss their next friendly match, which is against Morocco on Tuesday.

He has a good scoring record for his country but it’s not close to the goals to game ratio he produces for Barcelona.

For Argentina he has scored 65 goals in 129 international appearances.

And this season for the Catlan giants he has scored 29 La Liga goals in 26 matches, while also proving 12 assists.

It is expected Messi will be fit to play in Barcelona’s next game against Espanyol on March 30.
