Liam Gallagher is putting on free gig for ‘the incredible NHS and careworkers’ amid coronavirus pandemic

Liam Gallagher will perform a free gig for NHS and careworkers in October later this year

Liam Gallagher is throwing his support behind the NHS and key workers tackling the coronavirus pandemic and putting on a free gig for them later in the year.

Wanted to show his appreciation for our healthcare staff, Liam told fans on Instagram he is ‘honoured’ to announce he’ll be playing at London’s O2 in October.

Alongside a poster that teased Liam’s gig, alongside special guests, the former Oasis rocker wrote: ‘It’s an honour to announce that I will be doing a gig for the NHS and careworkers at London’s TheO2 on October 29th.

‘They do an incredible job, we are very lucky to have them. LG x #ThankYouNHS.’

It’s not yet been confirmed which artists will be joining Liam on the night.

He’s not the only star to send his support to the NHS during the Covid-19 crisis, as Manic Street Preachers recently announced they too will be putting on a free gig as well as a fundraising show.

The Welsh rockers revealed they’ll be performing for the NHS’ ‘amazing, brave workers’, while a second show will raise donations for healthcare staff in Cardiff in December.

The band said: ‘We wanted to do something to show our appreciation, love and respect for the NHS and its amazing brave workers. One free show and one fundraising show seemed the best way for us to express our deep gratitude for all their heroic work.’

The performances have been scheduled for much later in the year, in the hope that the UK will finally be out of lockdown.

The current situation has seen the government urge people to stay home and to only leave for essentials, to go to work, or to exercise once a day.

In the hope of controlling the spread of the virus, bars, pubs, restaurants, theatres and cinemas have been shut down, with many artists cancelling and rescheduling tour dates to adhere to social distancing rules and avoid large gatherings.

There are currently more than 65,000 cases of coronavirus in the UK, while the number of deaths is nearing 8,000.

As lockdown restrictions continue, some stars have been hoping to entertain fans during isolation, with the likes of Niall Horan, Charli XCX and Gary Barlow hosting live concerts via video link.

Over in the US, Elton John hosted a virtual benefit concert in aid of coronavirus relief efforts from his home, where the likes of Mariah Carey, Lizzo and Billie Eilish performed via video connections.
