Leaked iPhone SE 2 renders show Apple's next 'budget' handset

Leaked iPhone SE 2 renders show Apple’s next ‘budget’ handset will be almost identical to the iPhone 8 with 4.7-inch screen and return of the Touch ID fingerprint scanner

  • New budget offering from Apple due to be released this year revealed by leaker
  • iPhone SE 2 or ‘iPhone 9’ shown with home button but still no headphone jack
  • The 4.7 screen is the same as the iPhone 8 from almost two and a half years ago

Leaked renders of the new iPhone SE smartphone show a design much like the company’s iPhone 8 released more than two years ago.

The budget offering from Apple, which has been referred to as iPhone SE 2 or iPhone 9, will have an screen like the iPhone 8 and a Touch ID fingerprint scanner.

According to images leaked by OnLeaks and iGeeksBlog, it will have a 4.7-inch touchscreen exactly like the iPhone 8, which was released in September 2017.

The iPhone SE 2 is due to be around 5.4 by 2.6 by 0.3 inches – slightly more than the thickness of the iPhone 8, which is 0.28 inches.

Apple’s current flagship offering, the iPhone 11, compares with a height of 5.94 inches, and the iPhone SE 2 should appeal to users who prefer slightly palm-friendly devices.

At first glance the biggest difference between the iPhone SE 2 and iPhone 8 will be the frosted glass back like the iPhone 11 Pro rather than the glossy glass of the iPhone 8, iGeeksBlog says.

iPhone 8 was the last to launch with a Touch ID fingerprint scanner built in, replaced with face-scanning sensors.

The renders suggest Apple will be bringing back this feature on the cheaper iPhone SE 2, which is expected some time in 2020.

The original iPhone SE – or iPhone Special Edition – was released in 2016 for $399.

It was intended as a smaller, cheaper, pocket-friendly device for customers who weren’t adjusting to the bigger display sizes of the later iPhones.

Renders didn't appear to indicate the return of the much-missed headphone jack

This new update to is also due to sport a single-lens camera and a next-gen A13 Bionic processor, which appears in the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro.

There does not, however, seem to be any return of the much missed headphone jack on the iPhone SE 2, something that last featured on the original iPhone SE.

Apple released the iPhone 8 and iPhone X – pronounced ‘ten’ – in 2017 and bypassed the iPhone 9 moniker.

‘iPhone 9’ would be justified as the leaked design looks and feels like the successor of the iPhone 8, iGeeksBlog says, rather than the iPhone 11.

The next high-end phone from the company, likely called ‘iPhone 12’, is due to be released this year and may be Apple’s first phone with an entire-screen display.
