Labour Brexit warning: Corbyn’s MPs to be replaced by ‘socialists’ if they back Boris deal

The left-wing activist insisted any Labour MPs who rebel and back the Prime Minister’s Brexit deal will be ousted at the next general election. Mr Lansman also criticised Mr Johnson’s “wrecking ball” agreement, which was finalised with the EU yesterday.

The Momentum founder tweeted: “Johnson’s deal will be a wrecking ball through the lives & well-being of ordinary people across Britain.

“Labour MPs cannot and must not vote for it. If they do, the NEC will have no choice but to replace them with a new, socialist Labour candidate at the next election.”

Mr Lansman’s comments come after a triumphant Mr Johnson agreed a new Brexit deal with the EU on Thursday.

The Prime Minister is gearing up for a Commons showdown tomorrow as Parliament sits on a Saturday for the first time in decades to vote on his agreement.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was quick to dismiss Mr Johnson’s Brexit deal yesterday.

He said: “This sell-out deal won’t bring the country together and should be rejected.

“The best way to get Brexit sorted is to give the people the final say in a public vote.”

Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell today warned there would be “consequences” for Labour MPs who back Mr Johnson’s deal.

He told the BBC: “This is a three-line whip and the chief whip, in the normal way, will determine the consequences for anyone who doesn’t vote for it.”

Asked what they might be, Mr McDonnell replied: “I’m not the chief whip thank goodness; I’ve got enough on my plate.”

Jeremy Corbyn’s right-hand man added that he did not think his fellow Labour MPs would support Mr Johnson once they had looked at the deal in detail.

He said: “I don’t believe there are Labour MPs out there who will not think through the detail of this deal and then when they see the impact, particularly environmental, consumers’ and workers’ rights, will vote for it.

“This is up to the chief whip – I believe in the powers of persuasion.

“I believe we can persuade people and make sure, as they did over Theresa May’s deal, vote against it because this deal is worse than Theresa May’s. It is a sell-out.”

Mr McDonnell said he is against the Prime Minister’s deal “because we won’t vote for anything that makes our constituents or our country poorer and by any assessment that’s what this deal will do”.

He added: “It will introduce checks and barriers on our border and well it is worse than Theresa Mays deal because it removes those commitments that she was willing to offer about a level playing field to protect workers rights, environmental standards and consumer rights. It’s a very bad deal we can’t support it.”

Asked if he wants to leave with no deal, Mr McDonnell said: “The alternative is a sensible deal negotiated and that’s what we were doing with Theresa May’s Cabinet, with the EU previously, and then you put that to the people and let the people decide its been three years now.

“Let the people have a sensible leave option but also a remain option as well and let the people have the final say.”

Speaking at a press conference in Brussels yesterday, the Prime Minister said he is “very confident” MPs will get behind his last-minute Brexit deal.

Mr Johnson said: “I am very confident that when my colleagues in Parliament study this agreement that they will want to vote for it on Saturday and in succeeding days.

“We’ve been at this now, as I say, for three and a half years. It hasn’t always been an easy experience for the UK. It’s been long, it’s been painful, it’s been divisive.

“And now is the moment for us as a country to come together. Now is the moment for our parliamentarians to come together and get this thing done.”
