Kristen Stewart’s Inside-Out Suit Is the Style Risk We Deserve

Don’t ever — ever! — talk to me about Justin Bieber’s hotel slippers or Jonah Hill’s fleeces or John Mayer’s deadhead tees again, okay? Because I have my own patron saint of questionable celebrity style and her name is Kristen Jaymes Stewart. Unfased by the norms of celebrity fashion created by well-heeled stylists and PR executives, Stewart has popularised visible underwear bands, slogan socks, raggedy crop tops, and — personal favorite — wearing no shoes at all, throughout her decade-spanning career in Hollywood. As the celebrity style industry sings the praises of these famous men with borderline taste, I must perform my personal duty as a woman all too reliant on dry shampoo and tell you that Kristen Stewart is a fashion legend in every right.

Her latest look, an inside-out suit by Thom Browne, is the perfect fusion of Stewart’s devil-may-care taste and the high fashion world that has welcomed her with open arms. Stewart wore this shrunken suit to the premiere of her new film, J.T. LeRoy, elevating the already high levels of camp and Surrealism present in any Thom Browne garment to a new level with her own offbeat styling. Not only did Stewart replace Browne’s signature shirting and exposed calves with a white tee and white socks, but she took things a step further by pinning a small tortoiseshell hairlip to her lapel. Did she use the hair clip? Reader, no. Hours later, she was outside, shirt untucked, hair mussed, and hair clip still fastened to her buttonhole. Fashion’s not always about function—it’s about taste, and Stewart’s is singular and so, so good.
