Kevin Maguire: We need a Labour government not a shoddy Tory Brexit fix

Time’s up for Theresa May but let’s not blunder blindly into a Brexit disaster with an unelected Tory caretaker.

Flushing away a powerless Prime Minister — along with the Article 50 Europe exit clock — would give crucial space for a rethink and a general election.

We are a humiliated nation, the laughing stock of the world.

We must either pull ourselves together and change direction or future generations will condemn our foolishness.

The worst option is allowing a Tory coup to install in Downing Street the Cabinet’s most untrustworthy Minister, expert-hating Michael Gove, or the most unknown, bland David Lidington.

Flushing away a powerless Prime Minister would do the UK a world of good

Tory MPs are shutting out the public, playing pass the parcel with the keys to No 10 and concocting a bad Brexit deal to hold the party together. These are shenanigans worthy of a banana republic.

Conned Brexit voters are entitled to be angry after the lies, deceit and illegality of a self-serving, corrupt Brextremist elite.

One million people marched on Saturday opposing Article 50 and a petition calling for its revocation quickly topped five million — including more than 11,000 in May’s Maidenhead backyard.

This shows the change in mood since the referendum, called by a previous Prime Minister in a past Parliament, was narrowly won through dishonesty and by demonising migrants.

An election and a subsequent second referendum would be about jobs, living standards, prosperity, public services, security and the very essence of this country.

Whether we want to be fair or unequal, decent or indecent, tolerant or bigoted, insular or outward. Jeremy Corbyn up against whoever replaces May would put the nation in charge.

We would have the option of radical hope with Labour or continued decline with the Tories.

The outgoing PM was at Chequers yesterday. Begging serial liar Boris Johnson and Tory enemies to spare her while Chancellor Philip Hammond accuses Conservative colleagues of self-indulgence is a messy end.

Labour PM Gordon Brown was a global giant as he led the world out of the banking collapse.

Brexit’s shown May to be an inadequate national pygmy.

We’re worth a new government, a Labour government, rather than a Tory shoddy Brexit fix under a Downing Street makeweight.
