Keir Starmer's new Labour shadow cabinet unveiled LIVE – with Corbyn allies out



Keir Starmer promised a “balanced” shadow cabinet after winning a landslide victory in the Labour leadership contest.

The new leader of the opposition has already appointed to the top roles with a massive promition for leadership rival Lisa Nandy to Foreign Secretary.

There were big jobs too for relative newcomers Anneliese Dodds and Nick Thomas-Symonds who become Shadow Chancellor and Shadow Home Secretary respectively.

Corbyn allies Ian Lavery, Barry Gardiner and Jon Trickett were out while there was a concession to the “right” of the party with the appointment of Rachel Reeves to face off with Michael Gove as shadow chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.

Angela Rayner, who won the deputy leadership contest, was made party chairwoman, while Jon Ashworth remains Shadow Health Secretary.

But it’s not yet clear if leadership runner up Rebecca Long-Bailey will get a role with the reshuffle continuing tomorrow.

Starmer, who has promised to recruit a diverse team from across the country and party who “want to serve towards the future aim of winning that next general election “, is expected to announce the new shadow cabinet today. 

Sir Keir secured 56% of the 490,731 votes cast in the three-month contest – beating his rivals Rebecca Long-Bailey and Lisa Nandy to replace Jeremy Corbyn.

“I will have in my shadow cabinet those that want to serve towards the future aim of winning that next general election,” he told BBC One’s The Andrew Marr Show.

“It will be a talented, balanced shadow cabinet.”
