Keep your kids busy at home by making your own playdough, slime, and papier-mache

NEED time out?

So do kids. But with them stuck at home, it’s hard to get creative without spending too much cash.

Keep your kids busy at home by making your own playdough, slime, and papier-mache

Today, I’m suggesting you make their science, art and cooking lessons a DIY affair.

I do hope these playtime creations are a pocket-friendly success.

  • SLIME: I’ve yet to find a child who isn’t transfixed by slime, and it’s simple to make at home.
One slime ball requires 100ml PVA glue, half a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda, one teaspoon of contact lens solution and food colouring — then there’s the option to add glitter. Add the glue, bicarb and colouring to a bowl and mix. Drop in the contact lens solution and watch the slime begin to form. It will be stringy and sticky before it comes into a nice slime ball.
  • PLAYDOUGH: Eight tablespoons of plain flour, two tablespoons of salt, 60ml warm water, one tablespoon of vegetable oil and a drop or two of food colouring makes one ball of playdough.
Mix the flour and salt in one bowl, and in a separate bowl mix the rest of the ingredients. Then, pour the coloured water into the flour mix and stir together. Once all together, knead on a flat surface for a few minutes. Keep the dough fresh and ready to play another day, in a sandwich bag in the fridge. Be sure to get the air out first.
  • PAPIER-MACHE: I used to be obsessed with papier-mache when I was younger and it’s a cheap, easy activity. Why not decorate an old tin to make a pot for colouring pens? You need an old newspaper or magazine, mug of plain flour and mug of warm water. Tear the paper into strips, then stir the flour and water in a mixing bowl. You should not have lumps — just smooth, batter-like paste. Add more water if needed. Dip the strips of paper in the paste, then stick on to the tin and repeat until tin is covered, then let it dry overnight.
  • SALT DOUGH: You can get creative with salt dough and end up with a lovely keepsake. All you need is to stir one cup of plain flour and half a cup of salt in a bowl, then add half a cup of water. Get their hands stuck in and mix it into a dough. For a handprint keepsake, get the kids to press their hand into the dough, leave it to dry and then decorate with paint or glitter.
