Justin Timberlake explains story behind ‘It’s Gonna Be May’ – and it’s all Max Martin’s fault

NSYNC gave us so much. They gave us synchronised dance moves. They gave us Bye Bye Bye. They gave us Justin’s iconic perm.

But most of all, they gave us ‘It’s Gonna Be May’.

It’s 30 April, so we are of course celebrating with a meme you can only use once a year (although it’s so funny, we’ll accept it during the entirety of April).

The day before 1 May, the internet celebrates with pictures of a curly-headed Justin Timberlake alongside the slogan ‘It’s Gonna Be May’ – because, you guessed it, it’s gonna be May tomorrow.

The meme stems from the way JT pronounces ‘me’ in NSYNC’s 2000 hit It’s Gonna Be Me, but the internet joke didn’t actually surface until 12 years later.

According to Know Your Meme, we can thank Tumblr user amyricha for the meme, as they posted the first known picture of It’s Gonna Be May on 29 January 2012. Unseasonal, but genius.

Buzzfeed popularised the meme in March that year by sharing a cut-out of JT’s picture stuck on the end of an April calendar – and over the next year, countless parodies popped up on YouTube and across social media.

Every 30 April, It’s Gonna Be May spreads like wildfire, with even Barack Obama sharing the meme at one point – and in 2016, Justin explained exactly why he pronounces ‘me’ like ‘may’ in the song, or more correctly, absolute bop.

Speaking on Capital FM, he said: ‘I will say, in my defense, [songwriter and producer] Max Martin made me sing “me” that way. I just want to throw Max Martin on the chopping block for that one. But thank you Max, because we have the meme of the century.

‘I think he just wanted me to sound like I was from Tennessee.’

Since 2016, Justin, 38, has really embraced It’s Gonna Be May, tweeting about it every year.

That April, he wrote: ‘Everybody… It is ACTUALLY GONNA BE MAY!

‘#canyoumemeyourself Probably not, right?’

In 2017, on 1 May, he tweeted: ‘Hey guys… it’s May’, and amazingly, in 2018, NSYNC received their star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame on 30 April, a fact JC Chasez gleefully pointed out on stage.

Justin has yet to celebrate the annual occasion today, but we have every hope he’ll join in the fun.

Because guess what? IT’S GONNA BE MAY.
