Jurgen Klopp may retire in 2022 as Liverpool boss jokes over plan to coach Bayern Munich

Jurgen Klopp took over as Liverpool manager in 2015, following a successful spell at Borussia Dortmund where he won the Bundesliga twice, and is under contract until 2022.

The German has forged himself into one of the most revered coaches in world football and last season won his first ever Champions League with Liverpool.

Klopp’s swashbuckling style of football and the high press his teams adopt have entertained Dortmund and Liverpool fans alike, while rival sides find it hard to to deal with his sides’ attacking flair.

Liverpool’s recent success in Europe, namely a sixth European Cup and a Super Cup, has confirmed Klopp’s status as one of the game’s elite managers.

But the former Dortmund man may be thinking about turning his back on coaching sooner than Liverpool supporters would like to hear, at the end of his current deal.

While appearing via a video link at the SPORT BILD awards, where he won coach of the year, Klopp was asked if he would some day like to manage at Bayern Munich before becoming Germany manager and he joked about the order in which he’d like his career to finish.

“In the order I would like to do it. First national team, then Bayern, then back to BVB and then Liverpool for life,” he said.

“I have no idea [though], I really do not know that.

“I hope for now that the next two or three years will continue in the same way. And then I will decide that.”

Klopp then insisted that fans should not be surprised if he decides he wants to quit football altogether.

“Everything is possible. So just that I stop completely, is just possible,” he added.

“Whether that is the case or not – I really do not know.

“I’m just saying that so you will not be surprised when it happens.”

Liverpool have started their season in impressive fashion under Klopp, winning their first two Premier League games as well as their Super Cup final with Chelsea in Istanbul.

Domestic success will be order of the day for Klopp’s fifth season at Anfield.

Last term, they failed to win their first English league title for 29 years, ultimately losing out to Manchester City, who won the Premier League by one point.
