Jose Mourinho is Real Madrid’s first option to take over at club, says Ramon Calderon

Real Madrid’s president Florentino Perez wants Jose Mourinho to take charge of the club in the summer, according to Ramon Calderon.

Mourinho was axed from his position as Real head coach in 2013 by Perez, but is a free agent again after being sacked by United last November.

Real have endured a nightmare week of results, first being dumped out of the Copa del Rey by Barcelona and then going out of the Champions League to Ajax on Tuesday.

Many fans are calling for Santiago Solari’s head and Calderon revealed Mourinho was top of Real’s wishlist.

‘I have no doubt he is the first option for the president,’ Calderon told Sky Sports.

‘He is the only coach he respects. He’s showed that many times and he’s been courted in the last weeks.

‘He was, too, when Zidane left but Mourinho was with Manchester United so it wasn’t the right time for him to come back.

‘Maybe now he is free so there are a lot of chances he will be on that bench next season.’

Real’s woes were further intensified last weekend when a successive loss to Barcelona saw the slip seven points behind their bitter rivals in the La Liga title race.

Los Blancos fans reacted to the loss to Ajax by singing Mourinho’s name in the streets and the Portuguese admitted he was ‘proud’ to hear the chants.

He told El Chiringuito: ‘I am proud of that, but Real Madrid have a manager. Obviously it’s a reason to be proud but nothing more than that.

‘There has been nothing [between me and the club] – not even the minimum contact.

‘I haven’t done that [spoken to the players or the president] . Like you say, there are rumours. But rumours in football are bad.’
